Affixed to first blank leaf is a heartfelt handwritten note signed by the artist, Jack Spurling [1870-1933], to a Mr. Hardcastle, dated 15 December 1929. On opposite leaf is affixed a typed gift plate from one Lt. L.B. Whetstone, R.N., beneath which is written in pencil "H.M.S. Dauntless August, 1930". Laid-in is a one-page colour-illustrated magazine ad for this volume which reads in part "The life and colour of the golden days of sail, painted by Mr. Jack Spurling (30 colour plates and one photogravure) and described by Mr. Basil Lubbock.
